I believe in the importance of LEADERSHIP. Unfortunately too many people are promoted to management positions without adequate leadership training. Managers are like the drivers of an 18 wheel rig going down a curvy, steep mountain road. To manage well (the words in Spanish "to drive" and "to manage" are the same: manejar) means not to hit anything and get the load to its destination on time. No one has been trained, no one has been inspired and the company is not any more productive. I believe there is a leader lurking inside of every manager and that leader can be coaxed out with right kind of mentoring and learning to lead rather than drive (manejar) people.

Real leadership requires the ability to inspire with the spoken word and attendant body language. If, as a leader, you cannot inspire, you will expire. Effective communication is not an option for supervisors and managers. It is a job expectation and is one of the most valuable tools for productive leadership. The new supervisor could be facing a formidable challenge. If the promotion came through recognition of excellent technical skills and work habits and there was little or no succession training, the new supervisor may be left literally speechless. Communication is not only a productivity tool; it is also a judgment tool. Subordinates, peers and superiors tend to judge others, to a great extent, on the quality of their communications, written and spoken. There is no real leadership when it is not communicated with conviction.
True leadership requires good, personal, verbal communication skills. If you are a good leader, people will put money where your mouth is. There is, unfortunately the erroneous idea among many executives, particularly the younger ones, that if they know how to surf the Internet and can write e-mail and blogs, that they have all the knowledge in the world and are great communicators. Executives (supposed leaders) have more need to manifest their leadership qualities in face to face situations in the work place. Many people would rather have a root canal than appear before an audience. Even if they are natural hams and have no problems in getting before a group, they often are not effective because the lack speaking skills. This ability is not obtained by watching the screen on the lap top. There has to be exercised practice and application before a live audience.

People do not actually work for companies. They work for their supervisors. Companies are abstractions of physical assets, stock values, annual earnings and product lines or services. None of the aforementioned interview us, determine salaries, define activities or assign us to the little cubicle or give us that nice corner office with all those windows. Our impressions of a company in a job interview or when doing business with it, are principally of its people, particularly its managers. People, their attitudes and activities make the company. In some places it is just empty sloganeering to say that "people are our most important asset", it is, nonetheless, the most fundamental truth of good business practice. Success as a supervisor is directly related to interpersonal relationships which are directly related to the power of understanding and using good communications skills.

A "nuts and bolts" approach should describe managers' and supervisors' duties. The proper function, servicing and repair of complex and large equipment are still the Company's responsibility. This often ignored aspect of the Company's enterprise presents some unique challenges. Every company must have orderly processes to introduce new products into the Market to meet targeted revenue and product release date goals. To be successful requires more than believing that the product is unique or "should sell a million". A process consist of a number of steps, usually in a specific order, to arrive at a desired result. When a process is interrupted or there is no conclusion, the process ceases to exist. If a process is carried out to achieve expected results it is called closure. How can all participate in a process to bring about required closure? Everyone in the company must understand that there has to be a solid link of cooperation between all activities and how that is achieved.
This topic encompasses all activities related to manufacturing and thus includes manufacturing engineering, production planning, tooling, fabrication, assembly, purchasing, customer service, shipping and receiving. There is world of issues on a variety of technical and social levels that require mentoring from somebody who has been there for years and has been successful in turning things around and making profits for the companies.
