HONOLULU – With Hawaii’s low unemployment rate and tight job market, it is more important than ever to offer benefits and program to not only attract but also to retain quality employees. One such benefit is a formal mentoring program, which will be addressed in an upcoming webinar offered by The Hawaii Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). Taking place from 9 to 10 a.m. on Friday, July 14, the webinar will feature Christine Ing, president and founder of INGAGE, discussing the value and benefits of formal mentoring programs for companies, mentors and protégés.

“Impending demographic changes are pushing organizations throughout the country to take a closer look at their retention and recruitment strategies, and the skills and competencies of their people,” says Ing. “This is even more relevant in Hawaii as we continue to enjoy one of the lowest unemployment rates and companies seek new ways to attract and retain quality people.”

The webinar will cover 16 organizational areas that a mentoring program can address as well as provide seven steps to designing a formal mentoring program.

Mentoring is quickly being recognized as an important option in the personal and professional development of individuals in the business world. For the protégé, participating in a formal mentoring program can lead to benefits such as helping them set better goals, reaching their goals faster by providing a consistent structure of support, learning innovative strategies, receiving business advice, and improving relationships. For the employer, a formal mentoring program allows the company to develop a strategic succession plan and leadership development program in addition to serving as a valuable tool in recruitment, retention, and knowledge transfer within the organization.

Ing launched INGAGE in 2006 to help create mentoring relationships by connecting individuals anywhere in the world and facilitating productive and effective mentoring experiences using the web. Prior to founding INGAGE, Ing was the vice-president of Hawaii Family Dental Centers, the state’s largest dental group practice. A graduate of Punahou School, she holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Occidental College and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

The cost of the webinar is $25 for SHRM Hawaii chapter members, $35 for non-members, and $15 for SHRM student chapter members. Register online at www.shrmhawaii.org by July 7, 2006, to avoid a $10 late fee.
