Be the DJ for Your Team

John Ruff | 08.31.2006 | Any/All Industries | Teamwork/TeamBuilding
Are you a project manager, program manager, supervisor, manager or leader of a group? If so, what attitude do you bring in to work? During your next ride in to work, just listen to the radio and pay attention to the DJ. What feelings does the DJ pass over the airways?

The DJ knows that he is, most likely, the first sustained information you have heard that morning and his job is to put you in a good mood, motivate you and make you want to listen again the next morning and not change the station today.

That is exactly what your team wants to see in you as a leader. Come in with a can-do attitude, the ability to get people excited, addressing problems with solutions and alternatives and someone who is looking for problems to solve and things to accomplish.

How do you get there? What are you reading, listening to and watching on TV? That is exactly what is coming through to your team. As a leader, one of your responsibilities is to keep yourself motivated, energized and your attitude on the up side. Read some motivational books, listen to some motivational tapes and go see some motivational speakers if you get the chance. You will be amazed at the changes that occur inside you and at the changes that come through to others.

Remember, everyone that comes to work every day has a host of other things going on in their life and all of those are not necessarily positive. The last thing anyone needs to hear is a litany of someone else’s problems. As the saying goes, no one is interested in hearing about someone else’s vacation. You, as a leader, want your team to forget non-work related concerns when they walk through the door and to be excited to come to work everyday. You want to set the mood for the environment as a refuge from all the other stuff that may be taking place. Make this a place where positive things happen, where people accomplish things and where they can be successful.

You can probably name several people at work that you really enjoy working with and being around. Think about why that is and what qualities those people impart. You can do the same and once you start, it will become a habit that you will enjoy and one that will permeate every factor of your life in a positive way.

One of the biggest compliments you can ever receive occurs when people request to work in your area. When that starts to happen on a regular basis, you know you are on the right track.
