Why I Became a Mentor

John Schanck | 06.26.2006 | Any/All Industries | Skill Development
I have been very fortunate during my professional career. The training and development I received enabled me to develop competencies to succeed at all levels. I was also very lucky to have a number of high level executives take a mentoring interest in me. They afforded me the opportunity to work in functions that rounded my ability in areas that were not customarily included in the sales and marketing career path. Some of those functions included finance, administration, quality, and technology. I was able to develop competencies centered around strategic planning, innovation, team building, sales processes, training and development, compensation, market segmentation and others. The leadership skills I had, coupled with day to day management skills, assisted me to be lead high performance individuals and teams. I believe this is my opportunity to share those skills with individuals who want to take advantage of the resources available to them.

While I was at a major global financial information firm I was asked to formally become a mentor to a number of younger associates. Since I was certified, and enjoyed, to train in a number of sales development programs, I accepted the request. I really appreciated the growth of each individual and proudly watched each rise to successful levels in the organization. I was also the only male member of a women’s exchange group, assisting them to become more empowered executives in the company. I received great satisfaction participating in the process. Now I would like to share those leadership skills with others who wish to accept my assistance. Mentoring, I believe, is another way for associates to learn the skills necessary to succeed in corporate life. It also affords them the opportunity to shorten the learning cycle, expedite the completion of projects they are currently working on, appreciate corporate politics and the collaborate environment. I find the mentoring challenge exciting, fulfilling, and personally rewarding. I welcome the opportunity to work with creative, intelligent, spirited, aspiring associates.
